Illinois deputy climbs out car window to escape floodwaters

MINIER, Ill. (HOI) — A Tazewell County Sheriff’s Deputy is safe after his squad car was swept away by floodwaters west of Minier early Wednesday morning.

Deputy Nathan Hasting was checking Stringtown Road for water in the roadway around 5:15 a.m. after reports of high rainfall and flooding throughout the county.

Hasting was headed east on Stringtown Road and just crested a hill when he ran into water in the roadway. Hasting tried to back up, but the front of his squad car was lifted off the pavement and began to float off the road into a nearby drainage ditch.

Hasting was able to climb out the driver’s side window before the car was swept away by the current. He was able to get to safety unharmed.

The squad car was swept more than 500 feet off the road.
