La Crescent, MN (WXOW) – A celebration of life continues this weekend as a way to help fund cancer treatment and research. The 2019 Lizfest event sees the ongoing fulfillment of a young woman’s final wish.

Elizabeth Holman Melde made a request of family and friends to keep her memory alive by celebrating life and helping those battling lung cancer. After being diagnosed with the disease in September of 2011 at just 25 years old, the non-smoker fought for seven months before passing away.

The La Crescent community now promotes the idea of “Living for Liz” through the annual celebration taking place this year on Saturday, August 3. Starting with a golf tournament at Pine Creek and Apple Blossom Tour bike rides at 8 am, festivities continue throughout the day at Abnet Park near the La Crescent Community Center. New this year, food trucks will add a savory element to the refreshment and entertainment.

All proceeds from Lizfest go to fund local cancer treatment and research efforts. To learn more about all of the events and Living for Liz group, visit

WXOW continues to be a proud sponsor of Lizfest.
