Getting rid of “resolutions” and making change that lasts

La Crosse, WI (WXOW) – The new year is a good reminder to not only take a fresh look at yourself, but also your family. If you’re looking for ways to make a positive change for 2019, the Coulee Parenting Magazine has some ideas to help.

Heather Quackenboss with UW-Extension prefaces the latest issue by saying to get out of the “resolution” mindset. She said the word often leads people to make grandiose, nebulous changes that they can’t keep up with through February.

Instead, Quackenboss suggests writing down specific positive changes we want to make. With regard to spending time together as a family, she said to talk about what you want to do together, write that down (along with how to make it happen) and keep it in a central location to use as a motivating factor.

Quackenboss adds that the issue of the magazine also features a number of other good ideas for families–notably when it comes to family health. Breaking screen time addiction can be a big part of that, especially when the solution is creating time to be together without devices like a regular family meal or outdoor activities.
