Freedom Honor Flight Board monitors Hurricane Florence

La Crosse, WI (WXOW) — Members of the Freedom Honor Flight Board in La Crosse are keeping a close eye on the path of Hurricane Florence.

The organization has scheduled the Flight 22 for this Saturday. More than 100 veterans and guardians are expected to be part of the trip.

Freedom Honor Flight Board Members check Hurricane Florence updates by the hour. The flight is still scheduled to continue as planned as long as it is safe.

“The safety and health of our veterans and their guardians is our number one priority here. We’ve got to look after their safety. We have to bring them home safe and healthy,” said Dave Larsen, President of the Freedom Honor Flight Board. “We just don’t want these 90-year-olds in wheelchairs being pushed around in a typhoon.”

Larsen says the Freedom Honor Flight has rarely seen rain since the organization started, and they have never planned for a weather emergency like a hurricane.

The Board of Directors plans to make a final decision by Thursday night as a courtesy to those veterans and guardians who may be traveling to La Crosse from out of town.
