La Crosse, Wis. (WXOW) – Western Technical College welcomed students to its newly renovated Learning Commons, a project costing over a million dollars.
The new facility on the second floor of Westerns Academic Resource Center combines both their library and tutoring support services, essentially creating what they called a one stop shop for academic support. Included in the design are isolated study rooms. Staff said these allow the entire space to be used for both group work and create a solitary space for students who want to concentrate without distraction.
“Our first goal was to mitigate sound,” Western’s Associate Dean of General Studies Juan Jimenez said. “How do we play some tricks with acoustics that allows us to have that loud and soft space within one room without having big tall walls in between?”
Full-time academic support staff in health science, math, and communication skills, which were previously housed in a separate space on campus, are now located in the new space.
