MADISON, Wis. (WXOW) – Following Governor Tony Evers’ first State of the State speech, La Crosse area legislators offered their comments on the proposals brought forward by the governor.

“For too long, we’ve seen misguided priorities under Republican control that favor the wealthy and well connected. This is a new era in our state, and it is refreshing to have a Governor that is committed to focusing on the people of Wisconsin rather than playing political games. Senate Democrats are eager to work with Gov. Evers on the issues impacting Wisconsin families every day. We will deliver on his plan to improve health care, strengthen schools, fix our roads and invest in pro-growth policies that build up the middle class.

“Democrats are committed to lowering property taxes, strengthening local schools and giving Wisconsin children the best possible education by restoring millions in state aid cut by Republicans. We are going to grow our economy from the ground up by raising wages, expanding access to paid sick leave and making child care more affordable for working families. We remain dedicated to jump-starting small business development, investing in 21st century infrastructure by fixing our crumbling roads and bridges and expanding high-speed broadband internet access.

“With Gov. Evers’ leadership, these goals are all within our reach, but we need to find new ways to work together, invest in our communities and expand opportunities for everyone – not just the wealthiest one percent.”

-Senate Democratic Leader Jennifer Shilling (D) 32nd Senate, La Crosse

Sen. Jennifer Shilling and Rep Steve Doyle are among the legislators applauding during the governor’s speech Tuesday in Madison.

“From the day I was first elected I have fought for accessible and affordable healthcare, because I believe in the importance of the health and well-being of our families and neighbors. I have worked tirelessly to fully fund our education system, because I believe that our children deserve the very best that we can give them. And I have fought for a safe and well-maintained infrastructure, because I believe in the importance of safety when getting our children to school, getting our goods to market, and getting ourselves to church on Sundays. I was excited to hear these priorities mirrored in Governor Evers’ State of the State address this evening.

I’ve been impressed with the multitude of voices Governor Evers has brought to the table. His first act as Governor was to appoint the most diverse cabinet in Wisconsin History. From there he immediately reached out to leaders of the majority party in the legislature. It was heartening to see Assembly Speaker Vos and Senate Majority Leader Fitzgerald sit down with the Governor and work on the complex policy questions facing our state. I’m excited by Governor Evers’ inclination to look for bipartisan solutions in the face of our current challenges.

I look forward to working with Governor Evers and my Legislative colleagues to continue to move Wisconsin forward together.”

-Rep. Steve Doyle, 94th Assembly District

“Governor Evers’ address highlighted the importance of accessible healthcare, funding public education and fixing Wisconsin’s economy. His remarks promise a balanced set of priorities and a fresh start for Wisconsin.”

95th Assembly Representative Jill Billings stands and applauds Governor Tony Evers during his State of the State Speech in Madison on January 22, 2019.

“I appreciate that the Governor held listening sessions across the state in the months preceding his inauguration, and it’s clear the conversations he had with residents in La Crosse and elsewhere were reflected in his address tonight. As I do, Governor Evers believes that investing in our kids is what’s best for our future, and his commitment to funding mental health programs and special education programs in K-12 schools addresses widespread need across the state. He discussed his commitment to taking the federal Medicaid expansion money, which is something I’ve been fighting for since I’ve been on the La Crosse County Board. It was also refreshing to hear our Governor talk about preserving clean water and protecting natural resources, for the first time since I’ve been elected.”

“I’m eager to work together with Governor Evers and members on both sides of the aisle to pass legislation that works in the interest of all Wisconsinites. I look forward to Governor Evers’ budget address in the coming months, where he will outline more specific priorities and funding proposals.”

-Rep. Jill Billings, 95th Assembly District
