WINONA, Minn. (WXOW) – The power is back on in Winona following a collision between a train and semi trailer took out a power pole. Xcel Energy’s outage map shows power restored to the area early Friday morning.

Power is expected to remain out for the next several hours after a train hit a semi trailer in Winona Thursday night.

It happened at Ewing and W. 3rd St. where a rail line intersects with the street.

The driver of the semi was trying to back up when the collision occurred. He was not injured, nor was anyone aboard the slow moving freight train.

The collision sent the semi into a power pole which fell and knocked out the power to an estimated 1,600 residences as far away as Goodview, Minnesota.

Winona Police told News 19 that around 8:30 pm Thursday, an estimated 150 homes in the immediate area were still without power.  They estimate it could take Xcel Energy six to eight hours to restore power.

People affected who are needing shelter can go to the Winona County Office Building at 202 West Third Street or to the East Rec Center run by the City of Winona.
