LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – A local tax preparer gives some helpful tips for filling your taxes before the deadline hits in April.
The IRS has made a number of changes this year and some of those changes could impact your own refund. The deductions for charitable causes and for those parents paying for their children’s college tuition have decreased since last tax season.
Tammy Pedersen-Marker, from H&R Block, gave us some helpful tips for filing this year. She says, “The education credit is about the biggest tax break that there is right now.” She also said that anyone with children may also utilize the child tax credit that doubled since last year. Parents may now receive up to $2,000 per child rather than $1,000 per child.
Tammy debunked the myth that the sooner people file, the better return they will receive. However, she does tell people to prepare in advance for tax season so the process is quicker and easier for everyone.
