LA CROSSE,Wis. (WXOW) – Members of the La Crosse Common Council and community members got a chance to learn more about an affordable housing development on the city’s north side.
The project called Apartments at Red Cloud Park would be located at 1319 St. Andrew St. It would include 42 units with income based rent as well as market rate apartments.
The apartments would be built on a bus route connecting those living there with transportation to various parts of the city.
“Funding will be secured in April of this year,” CommonBond Communities Project Manager Diana Dyste said. “There after we will purchase the property by fall or winter of 2019 and commence construction spring of 2020. It will be about an 11 month construction schedule.”
Council members spoke both for and against the project. Some felt the project would help fix issues for affordable housing. While others felt the project would start to cluster low-income residents in a small section and members of the neighborhood were not included early on in the discussions.
“They want to welcome them,” District 2 Common Council Member Scott Neumeister said. “They have reached out. They have done a fantastic job in this area with the Kane St. Garden Terrace project. The neighbors have welcomed them in there, but the problem is we don’t know the outcome of that one yet.”
Other members and people in attendance feel the project could be a great addition to the area and spark more development.
“We will be members of this community into perpetuity,” Dyste added. “So we really want to make sure we have a strong relationship and are well received.”
Neumeister also added he’s in support of the development, just not sure if in that area without neighborhood feedback.
The neighborhood plans to hold a discussion with CommonBond members, but a date and time has not been scheduled.
