La Crosse, Wis. (WXOW) – Wisconsin is not doing enough to help kids with mental health issues. That’s according to a new report by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
The report says out of 72 counties in the state, 49 don’t have pediatric psychiatrists. According to the report, Eau Claire County only has one child psychiatrist with nearly 21,000 children in the county. La Crosse County has three child psychiatrists with 23,000 children.
“There’s certainly an ever growing need for them with depression rates up, suicide rates up among kids and adults along with substance abuse. Psychiatrist are really vital to the positive mental health of our community,” said Family & Children’s Center President and CEO Tita Yutuc.
Experts emphasize the shortage shouldn’t stop parents from bringing their child in to see a therapist.
