SPARTA, Wis. (WXOW) – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office identified the remains found last November by a hunter.

Friday morning, Sheriff Wes Revels said the skeletal remains were that of Jose Juan Zuniga-Jimenez of Sparta.

Jose Zuniga-Jimenez

He was last seen in March 2016.

Last November, a hunter found the remains November 23, 2018 in a wooded area  in the Town of Clifton southwest of Camp Douglas.

A vehicle found abandoned in 2016 about a half mile from where Zuniga-Jimenez was found helped lead to his identity.

The vehicle was reported stolen from Sparta in May 2016. The owner believed Zuniga-Jimenez took the vehicle to skip an upcoming court date.

Zuniga-Jimenez fled after a domestic incident in Elroy on March 31 with his wife. They were separated at the time of the incident.

DNA samples were taken in January from his two children and given to the state crime lab. Tests confirmed the remains were Zuniga-Jimenez.
