La Crosse, WI (WXOW) She is a “tireless advocate” for people who have physical challenges.
Doctor Virginia Wintersteen is an orthopedist at Gundersen Health System. Beyond that work, she has volunteered for years to provide opportunities for children and adults with disabilities. Opportunities that did not always exist.
So, rather than a life of seclusion, many people are now living lives of inclusion thanks in great part to the woman many call, Ginny.
Sled hockey is one of many projects in which Dr. Wintersteen is engaged. Separate from her work at Gundersen, she’s also a driving force behind something called the STAR Center. STAR is an acronym for sport therapeutic adaptive recreation.
The planned STAR Center would be a state of the art facility for La Crosse. Its design would help address the needs of an estimated 35,000 people who face barriers to living a healthy life.
