Garden design reveal

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – GROW La Crosse unveiled a 3-D design for an edible schoolyard at Hamilton Early Learning Center.

Members of GROW La Crosse and Coulee Region Ecoscapes revealed a 3-D design for a school garden on Thursday afternoon. The plans are for Hamilton Early Learning Center and they will include a variety perennial and annual plants.

The design also includes a pollination patch and a rain garden. The rain garden will help keep the garden alive while preventing flooding in the area. It will be open to the public so students and community members will be able to pick fruits and vegetables from the garden.

Executive director of GROW Jamie O’Neill said, “Local, free produce for the neighborhood as well. So anybody will be allowed to come and harvest berries, and harvest asparagus and things like that. So even access to free and healthy food is huge.”

GROW have installed and maintained gardens in the area since 2012. They have developed seven designs just in the last year. The non-profit organization teaches students about growing, cooking and eating healthy foods.

There will be a fundraiser at Pearl Street Brewery in La Crosse on April 6th from 6pm-9pm to support this project. You can learn more about GROW La Crosse by visiting their website.
