LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) — Motorcycles and cars will once again share the road as the weather warms up and riders hit the streets.

The warm temperatures bring the roaring of motorcycle engines which means drivers need to pay more attention to the roads. Plus, motorcyclists need to wear appropriate safety gear and be patient with drivers.

“Safety gear is key,” Rod’s Ride On parts manager Bruce Sperbeck said. “Especially this time of year, it’s cooler out, your reflexes aren’t as quick. It’s best to have all of the gear all of the time which is helmet gloves, jacket and a good pair of boots. Whether you’re going across the street or for a thousand-mile ride.”

Adequate tire depth is crucial during the beginning of the season because the roads are not fully clear of snow yet.

“Tread depth and tire age is also an issue because an old tire will crack and it gets hard and it’s not useful after that,” Sperbeck said.

“Right now there’s a ton of salt and debris and sand on the road which does cause a greater risk for your tires slipping and being able to crash,” La Crosse County Sherrif’s Department Sergeant Daniel Baudek said.

“Certainly we have to share the road,” La Crosse Police Department Sergeant Tom Walsh said. “We have to be very aware that the motorcycles are out. They have equal right to the road no different than any other motorized vehicle. Just be aware of them take your time and make sure we’re yielding to each other.”

Wisconsin and Minnesota riders are not required by law to wear helmets. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 19 states require all motorcycle riders to wear helmets, 28 states require riders under 17 years of age wear helmets, and three states require no coverage at all.
