VIROQUA, Wis. (WXOW) – When the company started in 2005, the owners of Kickapoo Coffee chose their name with the intention of honoring the Kickapoo River Valley.
But the name Kickapoo is not just the name of a river, it is also the name of a people.
The Kickapoo Nation is located in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas.
The owners of the company said on their website that using the Kickapoo name was an appropriation and claimed a name not theirs to take.
So they’re changing the name.
Owners TJ Semanchin and Caleb Nicholes said they’ve apologized to the Kickapoo Nation.
They are now in the process of finding a new name for their coffee business. They’ll still be known as Kickapoo Coffee until January 2020.
