LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – Funeral services were held on May 18, 2019 for a La Crosse man killed in the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

George E. Naegle was serving as a Seaman 1st Class aboard the USS Oklahoma when the attack occurred.

He was among 429 sailors who died on the ship that morning. At the time, he was unable to be identified. He was buried with other victims of the attack in Hawaii.

His remains were identified through DNA analysis last August.

More than 77 years later, Seaman Naegle returned home for burial at the Catholic Cemetery in La Crosse.
