LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) –  A local Jefferson Awards winner is honored at the National Jefferson Awards ceremony in Washington D.C.

Steve and Monica Holman are the regional Jefferson Awards winners. They founded Living for Liz. The festival is in honor of their daughter, Elizabeth Holman-Melde, who at just 25 years-old was diagnosed with lung cancer. She died just months later.

“This award belongs to our daughter, Elizabeth, who made us promise before she died that we would start a non-profit to change the dismal outlook so others would have less to suffer as she did. $200,000 and over 200 volunteers later, Living for Liz has put lung cancer on the map in our area, raising money for countless lung cancer research and patient assistance in the Minnesota/Iowa region. We created advocates for this disease where people simply don’t live long enough to advocate themselves. We are our daughters advocates, we are living for Liz,” said Steve at the banquet in Washington D.C.

Steve and Monica said this award belongs to Liz who made them promise to start a non profit to raise awareness and research dollars for Lung Cancer.
