LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – With the coming departure of current La Crosse Police Chief Ron Tischer, a city committee names the assistant chief as an interim replacement.

The city’s Police and Fire Commission selected Assistant Police Chief Rob Abraham to run the department until a new chief is hired.

Abraham joined the force in 1990.

He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command class.

Abraham has served as assistant chief since 2011.

The move comes as the Police and Fire Commission begins a nationwide search for Tischer’s replacement.

Abraham’s appointment as interim chief needs a vote from the full City Council Thursday night before it could take effect.

If approved, he’d take over on July 24 following Chief Tischer’s last day.
