UPDATE: The Winona County Sheriff’s Office has informed News 19 that they have recovered the body of the 63-year-old Winona man. They discovered the body where they had been searching by the Prairie Island Spillway on the Mississippi River. The recovery was made around 8:00 p.m. this evening.
WINONA, Minn. (WXOW) – The Winona County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies are searching a portion of the Mississippi River for missing boater.
Authorities were called Friday night around 7:24 p.m. for a boater in distress by the Prairie Island Spillway.
In a statement, the sheriff’s office said when they arrived, a passing boat had picked up one person but another boater was still missing.
That person is only identified as a 63-year-old man from Winona.
Sheriff Ron Ganrude said two men were out fishing Friday evening by the spillway when the boat began to take on water.
Crews searched for three hours before ending for the night. They resumed early Saturday morning around 6 a.m. Winona County Sheriff Ron Ganrude tells WXOW seven boats are searching the waters and nearby islands for the missing man.
The sheriff’s office said the Prairie Island Boat Landing is closed. They ask that the public stay away from the area to allow searcher to do their work.
