Minnesota State Patrol: Two killed after Coon Valley man ran stop sign

ATHERTON TOWNSHIP, Minn. (WXOW) – The Minnesota State Patrol said a Coon Valley man ran a stop sign and hit an oncoming vehicle, killing the two people inside.

The crash happened at 11 a.m. Friday July 19 at the intersection of Highway 9 and Wilkin County Road 30.

The pickup, driven by 26-year-old Justin James Helgeson of Coon Valley, was headed east on County Road 30 when his vehicle didn’t stop for a stop sign.

His pickup hit a Subaru Forrester driven by Margaret Mary Oneill, 62, of Moorhead. Both she, and a passenger in her vehicle, 62-year-old Thomas Andrew Burton, also of Moorhead, died from their injuries.

Helgeson suffered non-life threatening injuries in the crash.
