UPDATE: Criminal complaint provides details on Winona stabbing

WINONA, Minn. (KTTC) – The criminal complaint regarding Monday morning’s stabbing in Winona has been released and it’s providing new insight into what police say happened.

According to the complaint, the defendant, identified as 21-year-old Terrence Terry, gave police his side of the story after his arrest. In the complaint, Terry states he went to the victim’s home with “coke” and planned on picking up marijuana from the victim. There was a dispute over money for the cocaine, and Terry says the victim, identified as a 19-year-old man, swung a fist at him. Terry stated he wasn’t a very good fighter and stabbed the victim. Later, Terry states that at one point, the victim put him in a headlock, and at that point Terry began to stab the victim in the neck. Terry also describes the knife used as a “fish scaling knife” about six inches long. According to the complaint, the reason Terry stabbed the victim was that he needed the money. He also stated he ran off because he thought he was going to kill the victim.

The complaint states Terry later arrived at a residence on 6th Street where he met someone he previously had contact with. That person took Terry’s blood stained clothes and gave him a different shirt. Officers later found Terry and arrested him. Officers say Terry asked if the victim was okay.

Winona police got the 911 call to the victim’s home at 1:24 a.m. Monday. Records state the victim identified the suspect to responding officers as “Terrence.” The victim also stated Terrence broke into his house and attacked him. The victim said Terrence attacked him because “he thought I had money.”

The victim was first taken to Winona Health, then Mayo Clinic Saint Mary’s.

Terry is facing two assault charges, one first degree, one second degree. He’s being held on $5,000 bail with conditions and $300,000 without. Terry is due back in court on August 22.
