La Crosse, WI (WXOW)  Viterbo University is contributing to the fight against opioid and other substance abuse.  And now they have some additional help from the federal government.

The Department of Health and Human Services is providing a large grant – $741,201.

Debra Murray is the Director of the Counselor Education Programs at Viterbo.

The Director of Viterbo’s Counselor Education Programs Debra Murray says Viterbo was successful based in part on Franciscan values – a focus on serving the underserved.

Murray says they began training students to become counselors in mental health and substance abuse in 1997.  Those counselors, she says, can help change lives.
