LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – Gundersen Health System is among the recipients of a $15.6 million grant for cancer research.

The award comes from the National Cancer Institute and went to the Wisconsin National Community Oncology Research Program known as Wincorp–of which Gundersen is a part of. Other members include Marshfield Clinic Health System and Thedacare.

Gundersen oncologists said the funding makes it possible to improve on clinical trials that have already brought success to cancer therapy.

“This is an opportunity for patients to participate in treatment and receive treatments whether it’s chemotherapy, immunotherapy or other types of treatments that they just wouldn’t have access to in other organizations,” Cancer Center Director at Gundersen Health System Dr. Kurt Oettel said.

Along with Wincorp, 40 other organizations received funding.
