LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – Great Rivers United Way awarded a $4,360 grant to New Horizons Shelter and Outreach Center.

The money will fund a “Stewards of Children” program where community members can get trained on how to prevent child sexual abuse and accurately respond to signs that abuse is happening.

“I know it’s hard for people to understand or think that the sexual assault of children happens within our community, but it does,” New Horizons Executive Director Ann Kauppauf said. “Therefore it is a very important thing to have that training so that persons can understand it and know what it is.”

The money goes towards funding venues and food for these training sessions. There will be eight opportunities for community members in La Crosse and Trempealeau counties to attend these sessions.

Registration is required but these sessions are free, go to New Horizon’s website to sign up.
