Beirne getting his kicks at UW-L

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – UW-La Crosse now ranked 23 in the nation in the latest D3football.com poll with another ranked team on the docket Saturday.

Not only are they getting a boost, but they’re getting their kicks as well, thanks to freshman Ryan Beirne. The West Salem grad has already made a big impact on special teams.

He’s made all three of his field goal attempts, including the game winner last week.

Beirne also ran for a two-point conversion.

“At the beginning of the season I talked to Coach Schmidt and right away he said you’ll have an opportunity to make an impact for our team. I was like ‘Heck, yeah.’ I jumped all over it and hopefully made the most of my opportunities,” Beirne said.

“He’s such a versatile athlete. I recruited him as a football player and a kicker, not a kicker who’s also a football player. The kid is such a tremendous athlete and was as a high school player at West Salem. We recruited the heck out of him because we knew that these were the things we were going to see out of him,” said head coach Mike Schmidt.

UW-L will host Dickinson State in their home opener Saturday at 1 PM.
