La Crosse, Wis. (WXOW) It was a fast start and a fast finish for the UW-La Crosse football team.
The Eagles beat Platteville 35-28 in a WIAC match-up at Harring Stadium.
UW-L jumped out to a 14-0 lead just a minute and a half into the game.
Ben Schramski hit Jake Simuncak for a 70 yard touchdown on the third play of the game.
Then Cole Spieker blocked a punt and returned it seven yards for a touchdown.
But the Pioneers outscored the Eagles 28-7 and took the lead early in the third quarter.
That’s when the Eagles scored the final two touchdowns of the game.
The game winner coming on Schramski to Trenten Smith touchdown pass with 2:57 left in the game.
Schramski threw for four tochdowns on the day and Spieker had three touchdowns total.
” This team just continues to find ways to win I mean you look at what we’ve done at the end of games to win things like this.. that’s unebelievable and what a great group of guys. We don’t play very well at all in a lot of facits but just continue to find a way to win these tough games against really good teams,” said head coach Mike Schmidt.
” To come out with a game like that and just keep battling keep fighting when things weren’t always going our way come out at the end and just make every play we needed to make to win says a lot about these guys and how much they want to win and how much they love this game,” said Zachary Zillmer, who had three and a half sacks on the day.
UW-L is now 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the WIAC.
