EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WXOW) – The UW-La Crosse Eagles made a statement Saturday afternoon with a 42-0 pounding of the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds at Carson Park in Eau Claire.
They’re hoping that the victory can lead them in to the playoffs.
Both sides of the ball took care of business on the road Saturday.
Offensively, quarterback Ben Schramski led the Eagles with five touchdowns in the game. He ran in two and tossed three more.
His first score came at the 10:19 mark of the first quarter when he kept the ball to take it in from the four.
Later in the first, Austin Mancosky broke through the line of defenders and bolted 56 yards to help give the Eagles a 14-0 lead.
Two plays into the second quarter, Schramski found Jake Simuncak for a 40 yard TD. At the 4:49 mark, Schramski hit Cole Speiker for a 66-yards to give the Eagles a 28-0 halftime lead.
Schramski got his second rushing TD early in the third, this one a 48-yard run. His final TD came with an 11 yard toss to Joshua Rhea with five minutes left in the game.
Eau Claire did have their chances to put points on the board and did at one point. After a long drive, Blugolds quarterback Scott Procter fumbled the ball as he dove for the end zone from the one. Similarly, late in the game, Josiah Gerlitz coughed up the ball at the one which was then recovered by the Eagles. Eau Claire did kick a field goal, but a UW-L penalty gave the Blugolds a new set of downs. A fourth down pass from the five by Procter fell incomplete to return the ball to the Eagles.
UW-L finishes the season at 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the WIAC. They finished second in the conference behind 7-0 Whitewater.
Eau Claire concludes its year at 4-6 and 2-5 in the WIAC.
