Holmen, Wisc. (WXOW)- Football is officially underway as Tuesday marked the first day of practice. In the Mississippi Valley Conference, Holmen has been one of the most consistent teams. They are coming off an outright conference title. However, they are not satisfied with their seasons as a whole.
Despite winning conference the past two years, Holmen has struggled to go deep in the post season.
So, this year they are ramping up their non-conference schedule.
“We play against Stevens Point instead of Aquinas,” Holmen Head Coach Travis Kowalski said. “I would put our schedule in front of anyone in the state as far as competition level for non-conference. We got Chippewa week one, Menominee week two, and Stevens Point week six.”
“We want it really bad, and we got to ramp up the intensity as the season goes on,” Senior Running Back Brett Holden said. “Last year, it faded a little bit when we got into the playoffs, and we just kind of settled with a conference championship, and that’s not okay. We got to push ourselves to get better.”
“We got to get out here, get it done right away instead of screwing around and taking off days,” Senior Linebacker Adam Quam said.
“We haven’t been to level three since 2013,” Kowalski said. “We were just talking about that inside before we came back out. Our goal is always to make a run in the playoffs, obviously you want to get out of the first round, and that just kind of helps you build your program for the future.”
Holmen’s winning identity comes in large part to their numbers, which is only increasing this year.
“We’re set up right now to two-platoon offense, defense, even now special teams,” Kowalski said. “We are looking for 33 different starters for the season.”
110 players in total out for football this year for Holmen.
