Aquinas looks forward to new conference and new offense

La Crosse, Wisc. (WXOW)- The Aquinas Blugolds are bringing a whole new energy to pre-season practices this year. They are switching from the MVC to the SWAL conference.

This gives Aquinas a chance to compete against schools their own size, in comparison to the MVC where they were playing teams three to four times their size.

With this change in competition, the Blugolds are also adjusting their offense. Head Coach Tom Lee will look to run the ball more this year.

“Every offense relies on a quarterback, but we were very quarterback dependent,” Lee said. “When we were playing our 5th string quarterback last year, that was really tough so we had to make adjustments. Our coaches, especially Coach Kramer, we sat down and said ‘we just can’t have that anymore, we’re not going to have that.’ So, we think we got stable, fuller backs. We got good young backs coming through which we’ve not necessarily always had a whole lot of in the past, and that’s changed how we practice.”

The team is also on board and excited for the new offensive scheme.

“Well now we’re not necessarily the flashy position,” Running Back and Defensive Back Mason Viner said. “Now we are getting down and blocking, We’re playing for each other and not just for ourselves.”

We will have more on Aquinas changing conferences on our Countdown to Kickoff on August 21st at 6:30 pm.
