GREEN BAY, Wis. (WXOW) – History repeats itself.

The Melrose-Mindoro Girls Basketball team is back in the WIAA State Girls Basketball Championship game on Saturday against the team they lost to last year, the Aquinas Blugolds.

The Mustangs had a convincing 63-44 win against previously unbeaten Colby in a semi-final game Thursday night at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

Other than a 2-2 tie at only 1:22 into the game, Melrose-Mindoro kept the lead for the remainder of the game.

Led by Emily Herzberg (21 points), Mesa Byom (14 points), and Erika Simmons (14 pts.), the Mustangs built a 35-22 lead at the half.

A layup by Vanessa Lopez at 12:40 in the second half cut the lead to six at 39-33, but the Hornets got no closer than that. An 8-0 Mustang run took the lead back to double digits. They’d eventually lead by as much as 21.

Colby’s high scorer was Vanessa Lopez with 15. Ashley Streveler had 10.

The win sets up a rematch of the 2018 Division 4 final. Aquinas won that contest. The game is scheduled for approximately 12:45 pm.
